The Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry (NOVAM) was founded in 1987 by members of concerned faith communities in Northern Virginia who wanted to provide a compassionate response to the AIDS crisis. Since that time, NOVAM has played a significant role in the struggle against the AIDS epidemic by providing responsive programs throughout the region.
The mission of NOVAM is to educate the community about HIV/AIDS, to combat the fear, prejudice, and complacency that surround the disease, and to provide direct services to meet the needs of those who are living with HIV/AIDS. NOVAM seeks to affirm God's love for all those who have been touched by this epidemic regardless of gender, race, disability, creed, sexual orientation or national origin. NOVAM's mission is guided by a clear understanding of the needs of the local community, the particular challenges confronted by people living with HIV and AIDS, and a mandate to respond to the changing face of the epidemic. NOVAM's programs address a two-fold need for prevention of further HIV infection, as well as the critical need to care for people living with HIV and AIDS. NOVAM is supported by federal, state, and local grants, private foundations, diverse religious communities, and businesses and individuals in the community. It is assisted in its mission by dedicated volunteers who embody NOVAM's philosophy of a compassionate response. |

"Robert" is a student at a local high school who was recruited for NOVAM’s Youth Speak program a little over a year ago. When our staff first met him, he was a troubled kid and we identified him as someone at high risk for HIV infection. We worked with his guidance counselor and encouraged him to become a peer educator. As part of the program, Robert would have to complete a 14-hour training program that teaches young people both the facts about HIV infection and key leadership skills to help youth become role models and mentors on HIV prevention and health safety. |
