About HIV Testing PDF Print E-mail

ImageHIV testing is done by trained staff using the OraQuick Advance test. This means that the test is done orally, not by using blood or a needle. The actual test takes about 20 minutes with pre-counseling and post-counseling being a part of the procedure. The test is 99.9% accurate. The test does not test for any other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) but NOVAM staff can refer individuals to an STD clinic. HIV testing is free.

NOVAM conducts confidential HIV Testing for youth between the ages of 14 and 24 at our office in Falls Church and at locations in the community (see calendar for upcoming testing event locations). In-office testing is available Monday through Thursday between the hours of 10am and 3:30pm by appointment only.  Any youth that tests positive is referred to NOVAM's youth case manager for services. Please note that NOVAM is authorized to test youth between the ages of 14 and 24.  Those wishing to be tested for HIV who do not fit within this age parameter should visit their local health department to receive an HIV test.(Youth 13 or under can be tested with parental consent.)

This is an excerpt from an e-mail that NOVAM received from a community member who recently came to our office for a test:

"To Whom It May Concern: The other day I came in to get free HIV testing done, and was understandably nervous.  One of your prevention specialists took me into a room with high-backed, comfortable chairs, calmly explained how the test was to be administered, and asked me if there was anything on my mind that I wanted to talk about, or if I had any questions.  I was surprised, as I had never encountered such warmth from someone giving me an STD test, so I said no.  However, soon after the test had been administered, and the twenty minute waiting period begun, I found myself moving quickly into conversation.  [The tester] was very understanding, and easy to talk to, and as we talked I could feel my concerns over my test results begin to diminish.  Before I knew it, the twenty minutes had elapsed, and [the tester] gave me very favorable test results.

I think it’s absolutely wonderful that you provide such a valuable service, especially in an area with a large, diverse LGBT community.  I know that had I been forced to go to my primary care physician, my results could have potentially been found out by my family, and I wouldn’t have been cared for nearly as much as I was at NOVAM."
