. Upcoming Special Events Red Ribbon Gala Volunteers are needed for the Red Ribbon Gala which will take place on September 23, 2010 from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. Assistance will be needed from 4:00 to 11:00 pm for set-up/breakdown, registration, silent auction, raffle, food & drinks, and general event help. Shifts will be 2 to 4 hours long depending on the assignment. Individuals and groups are welcome. Community Outreach Face to Face Health Program NOVAM's busy Education Department seeks individuals who would like to share their story of living with HIV/AIDS with local youth. The Face to Face Program enters middle and high school classrooms, juvenile detention facilities, group homes, after school programs and church youth groups, bringing a message of HIV prevention through education. Youth participate in an informational lecture entitled HIV101, which is followed by a discussion with a person living with HIV/AIDS. Having a person relay their personal stories makes HIV/AIDS real for the youth we reach, and also enables students to ask questions, dispel myths and open their minds. People of any age, gender, race, sexual orientation, or background are welcome to submit an application to join our speaker's bureau. Own transportation is required; sites generally not metro accessible. Please contact the Face to Face Program for more information by calling 703-533-5505 x28 or click

. PALS Mentoring Program Be a friend and a mentor to a child affected/infected by HIV/AIDS. NOVAM matches a qualified adult with a child to spend time together doing fun activities like going to movies, museums, biking, etc. twice a month. We have several children on our referral list waiting for that special friend and we ask for only four hours of your time each month. The Pals Mentoring Program is a great way to make a difference in a child’s life. Volunteers must be 18 years or older, have their own transportation and complete an application process. Training is required. Mentors interested in being matched with a teenager and bilingual mentors are especially needed. LGBTQ Peer Educators for Youth Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry seeks young people, age 18-24, who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning to be trained as HIV peer educators. After training, volunteers will provide HIV prevention education and outreach to LGBTQ youth at community events throughout Northern Virginia and on the internet. Volunteers should be LGBTQ, have an interest in HIV/AIDS, a willingness to learn and a desire to help others, and they must be comfortable interacting with the public. Public speaking is not required, but is an option for those who are interested and comfortable. A 6 month commitment is required after training. Office Support
