History & Mission

ImageThe Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry (NOVAM) was founded in 1987 by members of concerned faith communities in Northern Virginia who wanted to provide a compassionate response to the AIDS crisis. Since that time, NOVAM has played a significant role in the struggle against the AIDS epidemic by providing responsive programs throughout the region.

Mission Story
Image In January 2010, NOVAM launched a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) program in partnership with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH). This new program, SiHLE, Sistering, Informing, Healing, Living, and Empowering, headed up by peer educators Gail Dixon, Program Manager and Keanna Faircloth, Program Specialist, targets African American females between the ages of 14-18. SiHLE is a peer-led, social skills training intervention aimed at reducing sexual risk behavior among African American adolescent girls.
